This is an example of the typical starting condition of a planter on Pine Avenue in Downtown Long Beach California. They are filled with dead plants, dog poo, weeds and trash. The soil is hard as a rock as it hasn't received any water since the last rain.
Over several weeks, our volunteer gardeners remove the weeds, trash and dead and dying plants. We apply compost and then a layer of mulch to build up the soil and we will hand water until the soil is ready to dought-tolerant plants that work in that specific environment.
We consider our canine friends neighbors as well. We provide designated doggy relief areas in each of our planters. We clean up these relief areas weekly.
Eventually all of the planters on Pine Avenue in Downtown Long Beach California will look something like these pictures. We’re still not done, but we continue to expand our volunteer gardener force and we continue to learn as well.
On an ongoing basis we will remove trash and feces, weed, water, and replace any plants that do not survive. We will also continue to water and add compost and mulch required to maintain the proper growing conditions.
